After leaving Mogadishu in January 1991, Barre temporarily settled in the southwestern region controlled by Mohamed Said Hersi law. Barre twice tried to take over Mogadishu, but he was overwhelmed by the army leader Ali Mahdi, and then retreated in May 1992. The desire to live in Nairobi, Kenya failed after local opposition groups to protest its presence and further support the government of Kenya. Barre eventually settled in Nigeria two weeks later. On January 2, 1995, he died in the city of Lagos from a heart attack. His body was buried in Somalia.
